Little is known about Gary’s backstory, only that he is the only child of Sluggo and he's Patrick’s cousin, but some easy-to-miss details throughout SpongeBob SquarePants have made fans believe SpongeBob and Gary are hiding a dark and very sad secret. The story of how SpongeBob and Gary met is unclear as there are different versions, but Gary has been with SpongeBob since the beginning of the series.
